Ohio Republican Rep. Bob Latta and California Democrat Doris Matsui on Monday introduced legislation to make sure states are fully evaluating the wide range of physical, natural disaster and cyber threats to their power grids before they can receive any federal funding.
The “Securing Community Upgrades for a Resilient (SECURE) Grid Act” would specifically require states to submit an annual state energy security plan before they could receive funds from the Department of Energy’s State Energy Program.
“The security and resiliency of our electric grid cannot be overstated,” said Latta, chair of the House Energy and Commerce Subcommittee on Communications and Technology.
“With increased physical attacks on substations and the threat of cyber-attacks from foreign adversaries that could shut down our power and endanger the American people, we must ensure our electric grid is fortified.”
